The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) website allows the public to access and analyze information about regulated facilities and their compliance with key environmental rules. E-Enterprise convened the ECHO Governance Team (EGT) to create a space for the EPA and states to cooperate as shared stewards of the information available in ECHO. The members of the EGT jointly track issues and manage continuous improvements to ECHO’s performance, usability, and presentation of data about regulated facilities.
Providing timely and accurate data to the public requires close collaboration among the EPA and states
As co-regulators, states and the EPA have a mutual responsibility to ensure that the information in ECHO is accurate, timely, complete, and presented in a usable context. Meeting this joint obligation requires continued cooperative stewardship of ECHO and its data.
Consistent collaboration among the EPA and states ensures clear and accurate communication of ECHO data to the public
The EPA and states meet regularly through the EGT to evaluate and improve the usability, accuracy, and completeness of ECHO’s information. Team members identify and solve data quality and communication issues and discuss ways to place data in meaningful context so users can draw appropriate conclusions. The EGT engages in cooperative problem resolution and provides feedback on upcoming ECHO features, products, and training opportunities.
Focused communication improves data stewardship and public awareness
E-Enterprise supports the EGT so the EPA and states can collaborate as joint stewards of compliance and enforcement information.
Support for the EGT helps improve the usability, accuracy, and completeness of ECHO’s information. In addition, the initiative promotes public awareness while creating a forum for cooperative resolution of issues and stewardship of ECHO data.
